Ian Fleming got his inspiration for his first book from Portugal.

Everybody seems to have seen at least one or two 007 movies.
Its creator Ian Fleming got his inspiration for his first book, Casino Royale in Estroil, Portugal.

The other day, I bought a book called the 500 hidden secrets of Lisbon
and it recommended the best 5 movies set in Lisbon.

The number (4) on the list is On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

After watching the end credit, you can see the movie was shot in Portugal
but while watching it, you cannot tell whether it was shot in somewhere else or not.

Once or twice you hear "Bom dia"
and you see some Portuguese on the sign of Jewelry store.

That's why I had to research more
and in the end I found some interesting facts.

During the World War II,
Portugal was a neutral country,
So European royal families took refuge
in Cascais and Estoril near Lisbon.

About 40 minutes from Lisbon

My favorite city near Lisbon

There were many spies in Estoril Casino at that time.
Even a board game was invented in 2015.

Ian Flemming was a British naval intelligence officer
and he got his ideas and inspiration for his first novel Casino Royale at Estoril Casino.
Ian was said to love his first book so much
that while he was alive, it didn't turn into a movie.
After his death, the book was made into a movie twice.
Once as a comedy and then in 2006 movie.

The locale of 2006 movies is not in Portugal.
It was in Montenegro.

Had the movie made while Ian Flemming was alive,
it might have been shot here in Portugal, I guess.
