To promote tourism in Lisbon, Turismo de Lisboa has been offering free maps and info at Ask Me Lisboa booths all over Lisbon. They are information centers where you can also purchase a  Lisboa card  or  book attractions  in advance to gain fast track access. Some leaflet even has a coupon so it's a smart way to enjoy your visit. As one of the most popular booklets at the info center, you may not get one in your own language. Don't worry. Just visit the site and the download. All the info is provided in six languages, including English and Portuguese. Some visitors from Korea don't feel comfortable figuring it out in English so sometimes I help them to understand and find out whatever piques their interests. It is kind of time consuming but I enjoy every minute of it. By translation info into Korean, I get to learn more about what this city offers visitors from all over the world. Through my Korean blog, a lady from Sintra got the info on OVO...

Henry the navigator  inside the Maritime Museum Henry the navigator is the best known figure in the Belem district. Strolling along the river, you can see him at the top of  the Monument to the Discoveries( Monumento aos Descobrimentos ). Never embarking on any voyages of discovery, he wasn't even a navigator. Still under his patronage, the caravel, a ship with outstanding qualities, was further studied and reshaped to withstand strong tides, enabling longer voyages. caravel in the Maritime Museum Among the little known facts is that Henry the Navigator was the head of the Order of Christ , founded in 1318 as the successor of the Knights Templar . Following 'Night Train to Lisbon'

이미지
Based on  Pascal Mercier 's book Nachtzug nach Lissabon, the movie takes you to this lovely city, Lisboa. This picture is from IMDB.  In 2013, when I saw it for the first time, I never imagined I would live here and now. The only reason I encountered this treat at that time was I had a huge crush on Jeremy Irons. Haven't seen this film yet and want to learn more?  from IMDB Jeremy Irons, isn't he dreamy? Just click here  and watch the trailer. Ever since I took root here in this city, I have been combing all over Lisbon for the traces. Visitors around the world are also wandering and wondering whereabouts. If you are one of them, here are all the answers you've been searching for. Roaming the streets, I couldn't find some. It took me many trips to cover all the places. I don't want you to miss any spot, so I linked all the locations on the google map. Once named after dictator Salazar, the bridge was renamed as April 25th af...

Appreciating the Monument to the Discoveries

이미지
Were there any metro station nearby, Belem district is the place I would visit everyday. At first I wasn't crazy about it, to be honest. However, the more passionate I got about Portuguese history, the more exciting and even mesmerizing I found it. Among all the must-sees in the Belem district, one of my favorites is the Monument to the Discoveries( Monumento aos Descobrimentos ). To commemorate Henry the Navigator, it was reconstructed after 500 years of his death. The first on the monument is Henry the Navigator.  From the left, there are Henry on top, King Alfonso V and then Vasco Da Gama. Since they stand side by side majestically, some may think they belong to the same period. Not true. King Alfonso V, nephew of Henry, was succeeded by João II , then followed by Manuel I. Vasco Da Gama served Manuel I and the next king João III . Vasco Da Gama, the famous navigator António Manuel da Fonseca - Suid-Afrikaanse Geskiedenis in Beeld (1...

At 11 a.m., the ceremony of changing the guard takes place right in front of the palace. Don't miss it. It's a treat. In London, I was lucky enough to see  the Buckingham Palace's Changi...
