Visitors from outside Rossio always pass through the Rossio square. Decorated with beautiful calçada and fountains, it shows off its beauty every day. fountain imported from France wave patterned  calçada Rossio means commons. Its original name is not Rossio square. It is D. Pedro IV Square, but not even Lisbonians call it that name. Well, the reason is D. Pedro IV wasn't popular among the commons. Because of him, there was a civil war. You can see his statue in Porto too.  The statue you see in Comerico square is D. Jose I.  D. Jose I. He suffered the Lisbon earthquake and his daughter was D. Maria I. D. Maria I Withe her son Joao VI and her grandson Pedro IV, D. Maria I left for Brazil because of Napoleon. family tree of D. Pedro IV Leaving her people behind was not good. But the worst came later. Pedro declared himself an emperor of Brazil and became Pedro I. He left Portugal in his daughter Maria II's care. ...

There are many lookouts here in Lisbon. Take tram 28 or better yet tram 12 to go to one of them in Lisbon downtown. Or taking a funicular all the way up and down is fun but it's kind of overpriced. And the line is always expected. Then there is another free and easy way to watch the beautiful orange roofs. Most travelers know Square D. Pedro IV as  the Rossio Square . From there only 5 minutes on foot with no uphill can take you to my best two spots. Rossio Square (1) At the Rossio Train Station From the square, walk up to the Restaudores Metro station . Easy walk with no uphill at all. Take the escalators all the way up and get out. And you can see  ST. GEORGE'S CASTLE . (2) At the Chiado Armazens On the top level of the armazens, there are free, clean toilets. The view from the bathroom is just breathtaking. After your lovely stay here in Lisbon, there are various ways to move onto the next destination. If it's not too far away, choosing trains over flights might be better way to save time in winter. Due to heavy mist, sometimes flights get delayed or canceled. Besides, when you go to the airport, you have to get there early and after getting off the plane, waiting for your luggage comes out can take some time. By using taxify app, it costs about five euros to get to the airport from my house. And to Rossio train station or  Santa Apolónia train station , the fare is usually between 3 to 5 euros. Oriente train station is kind of far but costs you less than 10 euros. Not bad, right? Rossio Train Station Traveling by train, it's smart to make a reservation way ahead. It's the end of the year.   If you are visiting New York, right now you are headed to Time Square to watch the balldrop.  You might wonder what the balldrop is and why they do it.  If so, here  is the info.  In Lisbon, many people go to Comercio Square (Praça do Comércio) to celebrate. It's a wonderful place to say farewell to 2018 while watching fireworks. There is also live show you can enjoy, too.  The festivities have been going on since 29th and today the last day of 2018 the live show will be on at 10 p.m.  Right after finishing this story, I am heading to Praça do Comércio, too. You can usually access the square through Terreiro do Paço metro station . However on New Year's eve, it is closed. So it'd be better to get off at Baixa-Chiado metro station and walk up there.
