Getting off Lavra Funicular, you must see three places.

When you get off from Lavra Funicular,
which connects the Rua de São José to Travessa do Forno do Torel.
there are three must-sees at the top.
Lavra at Travessa do Forno do Torel

These places are not that far.
It doesn't take more than 5 minutes on foot to get to all the places.

(1) Miradouro do Jardim do Torel

A good place just to relax and enjoy the view.
There is a good children's park nearby
so if you are with your children, take advantage of it.

(2) Jardim Braancamp Freire

The garden has a small pond.
It used to be a slaughterhouse and a bullfighting place.
A flea market used to take place here, too.

There is a plaque honoring Portuguese general Comes Friere de Andrade and his 11 comrades.
The general himself was executed in Oeiras.
When the royal family took off to Brazil during Napoleon Invasion,
Portugal was dominated by British Army, which arrested and executed the general.
This made many Portuguese angry and triggered people to act.
Finally the people drove British Army out of Portugal.
You can see his face on Portuguese money at Lisbon money museum.

(3) Monumento a José Tomás de Sousa Martins

Monumento a José Tomás de Sousa Martins is to commemorate the works of Sousa Martins.
Sousa Martins was a very famous doctor, who contributed to the development of Portuguese medicine.

He was such a brilliant doctor and cured a lot of people.
When he passed away, King Carlos I mourned his death, too.

Even after his death, people still come and pray to him.
There are many plaques which say 'Thanks to you brother, my mom was saved." and so on.

I saw some people praying in front of his statue.
There is a black box and inside there are many candles burning.
Some lit candles as a token of appreciation or prayer for their loved ones.

I hope everyone gets well soon.
