Farol / Museu de Santa Marta

In Cascais, after seeing Boca do Inferno,
you can take a stroll along the seaside to Museu de Santa Marta.
There are quite a lot of scenic spots on the way.

This was originally built in 1640 to defend against enemies as a fortress.

However, in 1860s it lost its military purpose
and started to guide ships as a lighthouse.
Ever since 1868 it has been active.

In 1949, they added a mist warning system.
Before the electricity was introduced in 1953,
everything was done manually.
In 1981, it became fully automated.

As its facility got aged, there was a need for renovation.
Finally in 2007, two architectures named Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus did a wonderful job to fix it up.

By the way, when you are there ,
don't miss visiting the outdoor cafe and enjoying the beautiful Atlantic oceanview.
