Watching the change of the guards at the Belem district.
The best time to visit Lisbon is on the third Sunday of each month.
On that special day, make sure to go to the Belem district.
Last Sunday, I went there as the guests at my airbnb wanted to visit the area.
They had a blast and so did I.
The ceremony lasted about 45 minutes.
I especially liked watching the marching band on horsebacks.
I recorded the beginning, the middle and the end of the ceremony.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Changing the guard at Belem palace has a 10-step program.
The following is from the flyer I got at the ceremony.
(1) Beginning of the ceremony with 'Royal Entries'
(2) The guard on duty forms up in front of the palace
(3) Arrival of the new guard
(4) National anthem
(5) Changeover of sentries
(6) Arrival of the mounted troopers and delivery of the code words
(7) Performance by the symphonic band and fanfare
(8) The mounted troopers leave the palace
(9) March of the old guard
(10) The new guard marches towards the palace
The Belem palace museum offers free admission on every Sunday
so make sure you go in and see inside.
