the last king of Portugal, Mauel II
My husband used to introduce books on TV.
He reads voraciously and so do I.
I am especially fond of old and rare books.
Seeing the auction of rare books by Mauel II got me thinking who this man was.
The last king of Portugal, that was all I knew.
So I wanted to follow upon his life.
Born in the Belem palace, he was the last son of Carlos I and the last queen of Portugal Amélia.
After his father and brother got assassinated on Commerce Square,
he ascended the throne in 1908.
Visiting Paris in 1909, he fell for an actress, Gaby Desly
and continued his love affair until she moved to New York in 1911.
The king married his second cousin Princess Augusta Victoria in 1913
but his wife wasn't the last queen of Portugal.
He got thrown out of the throne due to the Republican revolution in 1910.
So when he got married, he wasn't a king and his wife never became a queen of Portugal.
He died young in 1932, only 42 years old, even survived by his mother Queen Amélia, the last queen of Portugal.
As a voracious reader, he was keenly interested in history, leaving three history books behind, Early Portuguese Books 1489-1600.
Inside the Maritime Museum, you can see the inside of the royal ship, the "Amelia."
The chambers used by Manuel's parents, King D. Carlos and Queen Amelia are beautifully adorned with furniture.
Refined porcelain, crystals and cutlery are also on display.
The ship "Amelia IV" was used by Manuel right after the revolution to head to Porto.
However, he is thought to change his mind after hearing his advisers.
With his royal family, he departed for exile in England.
He died there but his remains returned to Portugal.
He rests in peace in the Monastery of São Vicente at the royal pantheon of the Braganza.
