After watching Favorita
As I am studying Portuguese history,
I find more and more connections with English.
At the start of the second dynasty, Aviz,
the King of Portugal, John got married to an English princess,
who later became Queen consort, Filippa.
Their marriage produced the world famous son, Henry the navigator
and their great grandson was Manuel I.
At the Belem district, you can see the monument of discovery
full of the sons of King John I and Queen Filipa
In the picture above, at the front Henry the navigator,
right behind him on his knees is Prince Fernando.
At the end is Prince Pedro, the father-in-law of Afonso V.
Right in front of him is Queen Filipa, consort of John I.
You can check who's who on the west of of the monument.
At the start of the fourth and last dynasty, Braganza,
the King of England, Charles II got married to a Portuguese princess,
Catherine of Braganza.
Even though they had no children between them,
through their marriage, the tea drinking spread through the English court and high society.
Her drowry alone was huge and it helped shape England as an British Empire.
Two reasons I went to see the movie "A Favorita"
(1) The more I study Portuguese history,
the more fascinating I find the connection between two countries.
(2) My favorite actresses are in the movie.
It was very interesting to see how Sarah got thrown out of the palace and then even England.
Well, her descendant was Winston Churchill, THE famous prime minister of England,
so in the end Sarah won England, I guess.
And the late Princess of Wales, Diana was also one of the descendants of Sarah.
Well, when you know one or two things more about something or some one,
you pay more attention to details.
At least it works for me.
That's why when I introduce Portuguese history in my Korean blog,
I sometimes start with Manuel I, whom every visitor remember thanks to the beautiful Jerónimos Monastery.
