Boca do inferno, meaning hell's mouth

In Cascais, one of the most visited places is Boca do inferno.
When you get to Cascais train station, you can walk all the way there.
However, about 2 kilometers away, on sunny days,
taking a bus or grabbing a taxi would be better.
It is the best place to watch the sunset in Cascais.

Right outside of the train station, there is a McDonald.
Cross the road and you will see the bus stop.
Take 427 to Boca do inferno.
The waves hitting against the cliffs eroded limestone and shaped a chasm.

There is an interesting legend about this place.
A powerful sorcerer married the most beautiful girl in the village against her will.
This mad man couldn't win her heart
and locked her at a tower near here.
The guard who was supposed to keep an eye on her fell in love with the girl
and they ran away.
This angered the evil wizard and he punished them by magic.
Here at Hell's mouth, the couple was swallowed by the rocks and the sea.

There are two plaques at this place.

One is about Aleister Crowley, a famous English occultist and magician.
In 1930, he fooled everyone by throwing himself into the sea here.
The whole nation thought he killed himself as he left a suicide note, saying
"Without you, I can't go on. The Hell's mouth wouldn't be as hot as yours."

Then three weeks later, he showed up in Berlin,
making people shocked and puzzled.

The most interesting part of this story is the person who gave the police the suicide note was none other than Fernando Pessoa.
The most beloved poet in Portugal was in on this suicide pretense.

The other is about António da Silva.
On May 13th, 1963, he died trying to save other people.
To commemorate his valor and courage, a newspaper company donated this plaque.
